How should you treat warts and verrucas

  1. Over-the-Counter Treatments:  These products work by  breaking down the affected skin, allowing the wart to be removed layer by layer. the best evidence is for salicylic acid, although you may like to try other products in conjunction with this.   For the feet you can use up to 40% salicylic acid such as the Scholl verruca  removal system.  For the trunk and limbs, go for a weaker preperation such as Bazooka Extra Strength Treatment Gel

  2. Cryotherapy: This is a common medical treatment where various substances are used to freeze the wart. It is commonly used in conjuction with salicylic acid for better results.  It is essential you go to a clinic such as Oxona Healthcare, where we use liquid nitrogen.  Only nitrogen gets the temperature low enough to kill the wart virus.

  3. Patience and Time: Regardless of the method chosen, warts and verrucas can take time to completely disappear. It’s crucial to be patient and continue treatment as directed.

  4. Preventive Measures: To prevent the spread of warts, avoid picking at them, cover them with waterproof bandages, and maintain good hygiene practices.

Understanding Verrucas and Viral Warts

  1. What Are Verrucas and Viral Warts?  Both verrucas and warts are caused by various strains of the human papilloma virus. We simply call them verrucas if they appear on the soles of the feet. Because of constant pressure from walking on the soles, they get pressed inwards unlike warts elsewhere which generally stick out.

  2. How Do You Get Verrucas and Viral Warts? Verrucas and viral warts are typically contracted through direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with contaminated surfaces. The virus enters the skin through small cuts or abrasions.

  3. Are they common in all age groups? They are almost universal in children, but get less common with age because of aquired immunity.  This immunity does wane with time, so you may get two or three bouts of warts throughout your life.

Myth busting

Warts and verrucas often come with a multitude of myths and misconceptions. Let’s debunk some of these common misunderstandings:

  1. Myth: Warts and Verrucas Are Not the Same. Fact: While both are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), verrucas are what  call warts when they are on the soles of the feet. The pressure of walking causes them to look flatter than ones elsewhere.

  2. Myth: Only Children Get Warts and Verrucas. Fact: These skin conditions can affect people of all ages. While children are more susceptible, adults can also contract them.

  3. Myth: They Are Highly Contagious from Public Places. Fact: You’re more likely to contract warts and verrucas from direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or by touching contaminated surfaces, rather than from public toilets or swimming pools.

  4. Myth: You Can “Bleach” or “Burn” Warts Away. Fact: Home remedies like bleach and burning are not only ineffective but can also lead to burns and infections. Professional treatments are safer and more reliable.

  5. Myth: Warts and Verrucas Never Disappear on Their Own. Fact:  Almost all will spontaneously resolve, but it can take years. Seeking proper treatment can speed up their resolution.

  6. Myth: Natural Remedies Cure Warts and Verrucas. Fact: Natural remedies like duct tape or garlic have limited scientific backing. Consult one of our doctors at Oxona for appropriate treatment options.

Treatment Options

How much does it cost?

We aim to be very cost effective for wart and verruca treatments. If you can pre treat them yourself with salicylic acid you may need only one or two freeze treatments. Our freeze treatments costs around  £155. Do ask our reception team to send you our detailed treatment plan before having a freeze treatment.

Home treatment

The best evidence for treating your warts and verrucas is by using salicylic acid.  It is available over the counter in several strengths. We recommend 40% for verrucas, and 26% for warts.

Popular brands of 40% salicylic acid are the Scholl Verruca Removal System, or Carnation medicated corn plasters.

Try Bazooka, or Bazooka extra strength for warts on the body.

All warts and verrucas go more quickly if you pare down the tissue as much as you can.

If you have a wart on the face, we suggest you don’t attempt to treat it yourself and book an appointment with one of our doctors.

Treatments offered by Oxona Healthcare

We will  explore the most efficient treatment options, so that you have choice in how you want your warts and verrucas treated. The following methods are considered gold standard treatments:

  • Cryotherapy, commonly known as “freezing,” is frequently effective for wart treatment. We only use liquid nitrogen for freezing at our clinics as it delivers temperatures down to -196 degrees.
  • Facial warts do better with cautery which is effectively a controlled burn.  Our equipment allows us to target the warts with pinpoint accuracy.
  • In rare instances, a minor surgical procedure known as excision may be necessary to eliminate a wart.

Regardless of your requirements, you can have confidence in Oxona’s commitment to delivering the highest quality care.

Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?

Yes, all patients require a pre-op consultation prior to any surgical treatment. During this appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, and the doctor will discuss the procedure and outcomes.  If you have already treated your warts with salicylic acid we may have time to use liquid nitrogen in this first appointment.  The total cost for cryotherapy is between £155 and £255. In other words,  as you will have already paid for this appointment, you will only be required to pay the balance after the treatment session.

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
