How to get a coil fitted or removed
At Oxona, we offer a range of low-maintenance coil types and dosages, in consultation with your doctor, so you can choose something that suits you and your lifestyle. If the coil or IUD (intrauterine device) is your chosen method of contraception, our female-only team of specialist women’s health GPs will go through all the options available when it comes to fitting and removal – with a range of pain relief options.
With a vast range of medication available, women are often not given a say in which they’re prescribed – or the rationale behind their prescriptions isn’t explained. It is our ethos at Oxona to make sure women have all the time, support and information they need – with no judgement – before making a decision on their contraception, whether it is the first time they are using it, they want to switch methods or they have a preference and want to stick to it.
At our welcoming clinics, our experienced GPs have the time and expertise to explore your individual circumstances, preferences, anxieties and medical history. We are here to explain all your options, from pills to implants, helping you make an informed decision about which method is best for you, your life and your lifestyle.
Pain relief for coil insertion, replacement and removal
We understand that a copper coil fitting and removal of coil can be painful for some women. Your anxieties will be acknowledged and respected, giving you the time to discuss any concerns and presenting your pain relief options, making sure you are fully prepared. We can offer gas and air, local anaesthetics, strong pain-killers or anti-anxiety medications: our goal is to help you relax during the procedure.
We accept NHS GP referrals, or you can even refer yourself. And because we have greater flexibility with appointments, we can offer shorter wait times and dates that fit in with your schedule and cycle. Then, we’ll discuss the best plan of action for you, whether it’s referral back to the NHS for treatment, or connecting you with a private specialist consultant.
How it works
From the moment you book your appointment to post-treatment care, we’re here to support you.
- Place booking
Book your appointment online, with no need for a referral. Payment is arranged at the point of booking, and you’ll be asked to complete a pre-consultation questionnaire.
Your appointment will give you the time you need to discuss your problem. Our specialists will make sure you are truly heard, then answer your questions with understanding, offering impartial advice. Before moving forward, you’ll feel equipped to make an informed decision.
- Treatment plan
We don’t offer ‘off-the-shelf’ packages. Instead, we build treatment plans based on you as an individual, around your conditions and medical history. We will explore all available care pathways, taking into account any anxieties and respecting your decisions.
- Check in
We appreciate that discussing symptoms can be uncomfortable for some people, and that you may feel anxious about your appointment. But as soon as you check in for your appointment, our relaxed atmosphere – with welcoming surroundings and friendly staff – will soon put you at ease.
What our patients think
I was recommended to come here by my GP. Dr Anderson and her assistant Jasmine make a wonderful team. They both instantly put me at ease and carried out the procedure with great care, professionalism and reassurance, as I was nervous. I would not hesitate to return for any further skin issue and I highly recommend Oxona Healthcare.
- Laura, Oxford
I had a sebaceous cyst removed from my neck. Dr Joshi and Jasmine were professional, efficient and friendly throughout and I felt in very safe hands. Very pleased with the outcome and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend for any similar procedure.
- Anne, Oxford
Dr Anderson and Jasmine were brilliant, friendly, helpful and professional. I had a sebaceous cyst removed and I am very pleased with the result. Very impressed by the care taken and the time scale everything was completed, I would definitely recommend.
Frequently asked questions
Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?
You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
Do you treat nervous patients?
Yes. We have the luxury of time to ensure our patients are fully informed and feel confident in the treatment they are receiving or any procedures. Our doctors are highly trained specialists in women’s health and procedures. For coil/implants, we can discuss pain relief options and assist in mitigating any fears or concerns.
How much do private prescriptions cost?
All NHS prescriptions are a set fee regardless of the cost of the drug. However, private prescriptions will be charged by the pharmacy for the individual drugs. The cost is roughly £20 for most HRT drugs, and £25 for Testosterone. A course of antibiotics can range from £5-20 per prescription. Your NHS GP may be able to prescribe HRT drugs, but this is at their discretion.
What pain relief do you offer during coil fits?
Our doctors are very experienced in coil fittings, so you’re in safe hands. And while we find that, for many patients, the feeling of confidence and safety makes for a relaxed atmosphere, where they don’t feel like they need or want pain relief, we appreciate this isn’t the case for everyone.
We very much respect patient choice and recognise that coil fits can be painful for some women, affecting everyone differently. We therefore offer codeine, Entonox (nitrous oxide) and local anaesthetic (cervical block), so feel free to discuss pain relief options with your doctor prior to the procedure.
