The HP20 Smear Test for High and Low Risk DNA Subtypes

Introduction

The HP20 smear test is a type of HPV test that detects both high-risk and low-risk HPV DNA subtypes. This test is more sensitive than the Pap smear test and can detect HPV infections that the Pap smear test may miss. The HP20 smear test is typically used for women who have an abnormal Pap smear result or who are at high risk for HPV infection.

How the Test Works

The HP20 smear test is a non-invasive procedure that involves collecting cells from the cervix. These cells are then tested for the presence of HPV DNA. The test can detect 28 different HPV subtypes, including 9 low-risk and 19 high-risk subtypes.

Why Some Women Might Choose This Option

There are a few reasons why some women might choose to have the HP20 smear test. These include:

  • An abnormal Pap smear result: If a woman has an abnormal Pap smear result, her doctor may recommend the HP20 smear test to determine if she has HPV infection.
  • A history of cervical cancer or pre-cancer: Women who have a history of cervical cancer or precancer are at an increased risk for HPV infection and may be recommended for the HP20 smear test.
  • A weakened immune system: Women with a weakened immune system, such as those with HIV/AIDS, are at an increased risk for HPV infection and may be recommended for the HP20 smear test.

What the High and Low Risk Subtypes Tell You About Your Risk for Cervical Cancer

High-risk HPV subtypes are more likely to cause cervical cancer than low-risk subtypes. The most common high-risk HPV subtypes are HPV 16 and HPV 18, which account for about 70% of cervical cancer cases. Women who are positive for high-risk HPV subtypes are at an increased risk for developing cervical cancer.

Low-risk HPV subtypes are less likely to cause cervical cancer than high-risk subtypes. However, they can still cause genital warts. Women who are positive for low-risk HPV subtypes are not at an increased risk for developing cervical cancer.

  • False negative results: The test can also sometimes produce a false negative result, which means that it indicates that a woman does not have HPV infection when she does.
